Vardy Community History Museum

Vardy Museum and Visitor Center

The historic Vardy Community Church building, a vernacular wood frame structure with Gothic architectural influences, constructed in 1899, houses the Vardy Museum and Visitor Center. Featuring numerous photographs and artifacts from this unique center of Melungeon history, the museum also highlights the story of Presbyterian missionaries who, nearly 130 years ago, founded and constructed a school for local children that served as the cultural center of the community until the 1970s.

The museum and visitor center also contains the Vardy Genealogy Library, a vital resource for those with Melungeon ancestry who seek to uncover their roots and connect with the past. The collection includes family trees, birth and death records, photographs, letters, census records, and personal narratives that trace generations of life in the Vardy Valley.

Whether you’re beginning your Melungeon family history journey or continuing a long-standing search, the Vardy Museum and Visitor Center offers a clear window into a remarkable and often overlooked chapter of American history.
