Vardy Community Historical Society strives to honor and enrich the lives of the Vardy Community and the Melungeon people through preservation of their history and culture. As an all-volunteer organization, 100% of donated funds received by VCHS will support our programs and preservation mission directly.
Expenses for maintaining and preserving historical structures are recurring and unpredictable. The Mahala cabin has received significant repairs over the past few years, fully funded by generous donors, but regular maintenance is necessary every year to keep the delicate logs protected from adverse weather conditions. The historic cabin provides a true representation of 19th-century rural Appalachian history and serves as an enduring memorial to a legendary resident of Hancock County and a significant contributor to East Tennessee mountain moonshiner folklore.

Vardy Community Historical Society is a 501(c)(3) public charity registered as an active nonprofit business entity in the state of Tennessee. All donations to our organization are tax-deductible and you will receive a receipt by email for your records.
